In short
The Shopify and GEO glossary by Francesco Guiducci is a collection of technical terms explained for non-technical merchants. Each entry says what the concept means in practice and where its limits are: from Generative Engine Optimization to structured data, from Core Web Vitals to Online Store 2.0 themes, up to checkout, B2B and Consent Mode. The definitions stand on their own and reflect how Francesco Guiducci works on Shopify stores, without promising citations, rankings or conversions.
What do GEO, AI search and discovery files mean?
The glossary explains five terms about how generative engines, AI assistants and software agents read a Shopify store: GEO, generative search, llms.txt, agents.md and Agentic Commerce. Francesco Guiducci defines them in operational terms and notes that no file or markup guarantees citations.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the set of technical and content practices that help generative search systems and AI assistants interpret a site correctly: entity consistency, accessible content, structured data, internal links and verifiable information. It does not replace SEO and cannot force any engine to cite, recommend or rank a site.
- AI search / generative searchGenerative search covers search experiences that produce a synthesized answer from several sources, sometimes with citations or links. For a site, what matters is making facts clear, consistent and verifiable, on an accessible technical structure. No markup guarantees that a site is chosen as a source or cited in the final answer.
- llms.txtllms.txt is an emerging convention, not an official web standard. On Shopify it is a supported storefront path: by default, like /llms-full.txt, it returns the content of /agents.md, and the theme can differentiate it with dedicated templates. It is served on the primary domain, without a language prefix. It does not guarantee that an AI system uses it.
- agents.mdagents.md is the storefront discovery file that Shopify makes available by default at /agents.md. If the theme has no dedicated template, Shopify generates the content; templates/agents.md.liquid allows customization. It is meant for agentic experiences, must reflect real store data and does not replace visible content, sitemaps or structured data.
- Agentic commerceAgentic commerce describes scenarios where a software assistant helps a user search for products, compare alternatives or complete parts of a purchase. For a Shopify store, technical preparation means correct product data, readable availability, consistent feeds and interfaces supported by the platform. It is an evolving area and not every capability exists in every market or channel.
What are structured data, rich snippets and consent?
The glossary explains three terms about how a page is described to search engines and how consent is handled: Schema Markup, rich snippets and Consent Mode v2. For each, Francesco Guiducci notes that markup or configuration guarantees no results and does not replace a legal assessment.
- Schema markup (structured data / JSON-LD)Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary, based on Schema.org, that describes the meaning of a page explicitly: a person, an organization, a product, an article. On Shopify it is often implemented as JSON-LD. The data must represent real content that can be checked on the page and does not guarantee rich results, rankings or citations.
- Rich snippetA rich snippet is an enhanced presentation of a search result, which can appear when an engine understands valid structured data and decides to show it. The markup does not guarantee display: the final decision stays with the search engine and depends on content eligibility and its guidelines.
- Consent Mode v2Consent Mode v2 is the Google mechanism through which Google tags receive signals about the user's consent status. On Shopify the implementation depends on the consent management platform, the installed tags and the chosen configuration. The technical part must be checked together with the merchant's obligations and does not replace a legal assessment on privacy.
What are performance, apps and technical debt?
The glossary explains five terms about the speed and maintainability of a Shopify store: Core Web Vitals, LCP, INP, technical debt and app reduction. Francesco Guiducci measures the effects on the real store, without promising values in advance.
- Core Web VitalsCore Web Vitals are metrics Google uses to assess the real user experience of a page: LCP for loading the main content, INP for responsiveness, CLS for visual stability. On Shopify they depend on theme, images, scripts and installed apps, so work is measured on the real store, with no values promised in advance.
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long it takes for the largest visible content element in the initial area of the page to appear. Hero images, fonts, loading priority and scripts can affect it. On Shopify the work starts by identifying the actual LCP element and measuring how the page really behaves.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint)Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how responsive a page is to user interactions during the visit. Heavy JavaScript, costly event handlers and third-party scripts increase the perceived delay. On a Shopify store the work is to find the slow interactions and the scripts or components that occupy the main thread.
- Technical debtTechnical debt is the accumulation of choices that make a project harder to maintain over time: duplicated code, undocumented customizations, overlapping apps, solutions added without a coherent structure. On Shopify it is managed with periodic review of theme, apps, integrations and data, favoring changes that reduce complexity and risk without removing needed features.
- App reductionApp reduction is the review of installed apps to understand which ones are really needed and which functions can be handled with native Shopify or theme capabilities. It does not mean removing every app: for backend, integrations or dedicated logic an app may be the right answer. Impact is checked before and after each removal.
What are the Online Store 2.0 theme, metafields and metaobjects?
The glossary explains four terms about how a Shopify theme is built and how data is organized: Online Store 2.0, Theme App Extension, metafields and metaobjects. Francesco Guiducci uses them to build components the merchant can manage without reaching for an app for every function.
- Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme (OS 2.0)Online Store 2.0 is the Shopify theme architecture based on JSON templates, configurable sections and integration with metafields and app blocks. Merchants manage many parts of the layout from the theme editor, while it stays possible to work in Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript when deeper customization is needed.
- Theme app extensionA theme app extension is the mechanism through which a Shopify app adds app blocks or app embeds to a compatible theme without directly editing the merchant's theme files. The integration stays more isolated and manageable from the editor. Availability, limits and methods depend on the platform's current APIs and rules.
- MetafieldA metafield is an additional data field attached to a Shopify resource, such as a product, a collection or a page. It stores information the standard fields do not cover and can be connected to theme blocks or read by Liquid. It structures specific data without typing it into the content of every page.
- MetaobjectA metaobject is a custom data structure made of fields and reusable entries. Unlike a metafield, which is attached to an existing resource, it can represent a standalone entity and be referenced by products, pages or other content. It is useful when the same information must be managed in one place and reused across the store.
What are Functions, checkout and B2B sales?
The glossary explains three terms about backend customizations, checkout and business-to-business sales: Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility and native B2B. Francesco Guiducci always checks what the plan and the account allow before proposing a customization.
- Shopify FunctionsShopify Functions lets developers customize some backend logic, such as discounts, cart validation rules or shipping options, by running code on Shopify infrastructure instead of fragile browser scripts. Available capabilities depend on the API, the type of Function, the plan and the platform's current conditions.
- Checkout ExtensibilityCheckout Extensibility is the architecture through which Shopify allows certain checkout customizations via extensions and apps, without directly editing the core layout. Concrete options change with the plan, the extension type and the merchant's setup, so the capability available on the account is checked before a customization is proposed.
- Native B2B on ShopifyNative B2B refers to the features Shopify offers for business-to-business sales: catalogs or dedicated commercial terms. Availability changes by plan, market and account. Francesco Guiducci assesses what is available on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans and, where native coverage is missing, considers a compatible integration or alternative development.

Frequently asked questions
- What is GEO, and why does Francesco Guiducci treat it with caution?GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, gathers technical and content practices that make a site clearer for generative search systems. Francesco Guiducci treats it with caution because no practice can force an engine to cite or recommend a site: the work is on clarity, consistency and verifiability, with no promised results.
- Is the glossary useful for people who do not know Shopify?Yes. Francesco Guiducci wrote the definitions for non-technical merchants, with self-contained sentences that explain the practical meaning of each term. Every entry also states the limits of the concept, to avoid wrong expectations about rankings, citations or features that depend on plan, market or account setup.
- Are llms.txt and agents.md the same thing? No. Francesco Guiducci keeps the two files apart: llms.txt is an emerging convention and not an official standard, while agents.md is the storefront discovery file that Shopify makes available by default. On Shopify the /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt paths point by default to the same content as /agents.md, unless specific templates exist.
- What is the difference between a metafield and a metaobject?A metafield is an additional field attached to an existing resource, such as a product or a collection. A metaobject, in the sense Francesco Guiducci uses on Shopify projects, is a standalone data structure made of fields and reusable entries, which products, pages or other content can reference.
- Does Consent Mode v2 settle privacy obligations? No. Consent Mode v2 is a technical mechanism through which Google tags receive consent signals. Francesco Guiducci checks its implementation on Shopify together with the consent platform and installed tags, but assessing the merchant's obligations is a legal matter that this configuration does not replace.
- What is a rich snippet, and does markup guarantee one?A rich snippet is an enhanced presentation of a search result, which may appear when a search engine understands valid structured data. Markup does not guarantee display: the decision stays with the search engine. On Shopify, structured data is often implemented in JSON-LD, on real content that can be verified on the page.
- What are Core Web Vitals and how does Francesco Guiducci read them?Core Web Vitals are Google metrics on the real experience of a page: LCP for loading the main content, INP for responsiveness, CLS for visual stability. Francesco Guiducci measures their trend on the real store, across theme, images, scripts and apps, without promising values in advance.
